Engraved

Hundred steps east of the mile marker, he remembered
And smiled to himself
Time flies, but distances remain the same
At least the literal ones

He struggled through the forest
Dusting cobwebs, treading on uneven soil
While his eyes searched
for that elusive tree

A man who had everything
But seemingly nothing
Looking for assurance

In a bark of wood
Two letters carved neatly
Covered by a heart
Pierced by an arrow

And a word etched below in defiance
"Forever"

@Shreemoyee: Because sometimes you are so far uprooted from your bearings, so taken away from your identity that you need some reassurance about who you were in the first place, that the man in the mirror is still you
